Abstract

The paper presents the interdependence between economic growth, innovation and unemployment in Orthodox countries in the period 1999-2018. The analysis showed that Russia leads in the export of high technologies. Ukraine has the highest value of capacity for innovation index, while Serbia has the lowest value of this index. Armenia has the highest average economic growth in the observed period, and Greece has the lowest average economic growth. Russia has the largest average investment in research and development (R&D), and Georgia has the smallest investment in R&D. North Macedonia has the highest unemployment rate, while Moldova has the lowest unemployment rate. The results show that there is a positive and statistically significant correlation coefficient in the case of Belarus, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine, which suggests that the growth of investment in R&D will lead to economic growth in these countries. A statistically significant correlation coefficient was found between innovation and unemployment in the following countries: Belarus, Cyprus, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Romania. A negative and statistically significant correlation coefficient was found between economic growth and unemployment in Armenia, Georgia, Greece and Russia. This finding suggests that rising unemployment in these countries will lead to an economic downturn.
