Abstract

The process of globalization, turbulent technological and economic changes, as well as long lasting economic crisis has had a significant impact on the world economy. In order to overcome the consequences of the crisis and ensure economic growth and prosperity in the long term, states must choose appropriate strategies that would lead to the successful goals achievement. In that sense, the concept of competitiveness could be an efficient mean. Competitiveness is a relatively new term, but in the light of dynamic changes in the world economy it becomes more and more actual. There are many ways of defining and measuring competitiveness, as well as strategies for its encouragement. The main focus of the publication, however, is on the European Union, which in the framework of the Lisbon Strategy and the Europe 2020 Strategy, defines the encouraging competitiveness as one of the priority objectives that would lead to the sustainable growth of the economy of the member states, enabling easier recovery from the crisis and strengthening the international competitive position. Serbia, which has had for many years an insufficient level of competitiveness of the economy, could implement the good practices of EU member states by developing appropriate strategies and thus to contribute to positive changes and improve the position of the Serbian economy in the world economic system.
