Abstract

Sustainability has emerged as a significant and pressing issue, garnering attention from researchers, institutions, global corporations, and economies, aiming to enhance human well-being comprehensively. Within this Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, Research and development institutions (RDI) play an important role as catalysts for societal transformation and researching diverse societal challenges. This paper analyses the two indicators related to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: research and development expenditure as a proportion of GDP and researchers (in full-time equivalent) per million inhabitants. The research aims to highlight the importance of the scientific research sector as a partner for collaboration with the business community in achieving sustainable development. This chapter will also analyse some data related to Serbia. In the context of developing countries, the concept of sustainability holds great potential for improving their position within the regional context.
