Abstract

One of the biggest issues in the economies around the world is a high level of the unemployment rate. Unemployment is significantly more evident among the young people than adults. The paper focuses on specific topics of the youth unemployment problems especially ones of the young between fifteen and twenty-four years old who have not continued their education. The goal is to present their position on the labor market in the Republic of Serbia as well as in all the Balkan countries. The paper consists of two parts: the first provides an overview of the Serbian labor market and position of youth in Europe, and the second part describes and evaluates the unemployed young not in the educational system (who were neither enrolled in school nor in a formal training program). The data shown in this paper is for the period from 2009 to 2013 according to the Eurostat for Serbia and the Balkan countries. It has been concluded that the position of the young people in the Balkan countries is at the very low level. Governments should invest in programs and projects so that the young be more satisfied and prepared for their independent lives.
