Abstract

In the article the authors have explored the present situation in the Republic of Serbia in the area of composting as one the very important way of treating organic solid waste. In general, Serbia is still at the beginning of the process of organizing comprehensive system of solid waste management and compost production has not been developed yet. With exception of some smaller pilot facilities, in Serbia no business is currently handling compost production for fertilising or soil conditioning purposes. However, the market analysis which results are presented in the article has shown that there is evident market potential for commercialize of produced compost in Serbia. The strategy of Serbian agribusiness development includes the development of production organic food, flower, vegetable and fruit and alike – in all of these productions the compost could be used as an important input. Moreover, as Serbian laws have been harmonizing with the EU laws and practices, the issue of solid waste management, including composting as a type of solid waste recycling, appears to be one viable options. Starting from above mentioned in this article have been studied, on a case of small municipality in Serbia, the current problems in the waste management system, the technological concept of the compost production, marketing possibilities and the feasibility and sustainability of compost production within the existing institutional framework.
